Nicolas Gaitan created the most chances for Benfica in the Champions League this season.

And Salvio has admitted his Argentinian compatriot was close to making the transfer from Portugal to La Liga with his former club, Atletico.

The 25-year-old wished Gaitan well with the Spanish side, following six years with Benfica, but admits the talented South American will be greatly missed on the field for the Portuguese champions.

Speaking to ESPN, Salvio said: “I know there’s a big possibility for Nico to go to Atletico Madrid. I’m very happy for him, because we’ve spent a lot of time together.

“Benfica is losing one of its stars. He’s been important in all the years I’ve been here. He’s going to a great club and I wish him all the best.”

The winger has been linked with a move to Manchester United at different points over the last couple of years. As recently as February, according to Portuguese publication Record, the Red Devils were preparing to sign Gaitan.
