The former Liverpool captain has selected just one member of Leicester City’s squad despite their superb form, while two Manchester United players make the cut
The former Liverpool captain was asked by The Sunday Times to select his best XI from the English top-flight this term, but has omitted many people’s choice for Player of the Year, Riyad Mahrez.
He is not the only Leicester City player left out, with only Jamie Vardy selected from the Foxes squad despite their remarkable rise to the top of the table.
In their absence, five Tottenham stars including Harry Kane and Dele Alli earn their places while Dimitri Payet, Romelu Lukaku and David de Gea’s fine form also recognised.
But that is where the logical choices seemingly end, with De Gea’s Manchester United club-mate Daley Blind picked alongside Toby Alderweireld at the heart of the defence despite the Dutch international struggling at times this season in an unfamiliar role.
And perhaps the biggest shock comes with Branislav Ivanovic, who was slated for his part in Chelsea’s slide from champions to relegation battlers in the first half of the season, chosen ahead of Hector Bellerin and Danny Simpson at right-back.
