Liverpool Ready To Raise £8m Davies Offer

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is set to make an improved offer for Swansea left-back Ben Davies after an initial bid of £8 million was turned down by the Welsh side.

The Times reports that Rodgers is keen on making the 21-year-old his fifth summer recruit after Liverpool wrapped up the signing of winger Lazar Markovic from Benfica for £20m on Tuesday.

Tottenham have reportedly dropped their interest in Davies after making a similar bid – but the offers from them and Liverpool have been rejected as Swansea value Davies at around £12m.

Liverpool’s desire to land Davies increased after Sevilla turned down an offer of £16m for their left-back Alberto Moreno in May.

Sources have told ESPN that the two clubs cannot agree a fee but that 22-year-old Moreno remains a target and Liverpool may yet revive their pursuit of the £20m-rated Spaniard. However, with a successful transfer from from certain, they have taken a serious interest in alternatives.

Rodgers’ team struggled on the left side of defence last season, first-choice for the position Jose Enrique suffering a long-term knee injury and loanee Aly Cissokho having an unsuccessful spell as his stand-in.

Davies is seen as a potential solution. He broke into the Swansea first team in 2012 and has made 84 appearances after graduating from the youth system. He also signed a contract extension with the club last December which could keep him at the Liberty Stadium until 2017.
