Liverpool are set to miss out on exciting Benfica winger Ola John after he opted to sign for German side Hamburg on loan until the end of the season, according to reports in Sports Direct News.
The Dutch youngster has been credited as one of European football’s brightest prospects this year and had been targeted by Reds boss Brendan Rodgers as a potential solution to his problems on the Liverpool wings.
The Anfield club rid themselves of both Stewart Downing and Oussama Assaidi this summer, and on Chelsea star has failed to impress since being brought on board in their stead, leading Rodgers to take a closer look at the Benfica ace.
However, John has instead spurned the chance to move to Merseyside by travelling to Germany to put pen-to-paper on a short term deal with Hamburg after they made an approach to get in a replacement for Maximilian Beister, who is set for six months on the sidelines after suffering a cruciate ligament injury.
Benfica have now lost two players in the space of a week after fellow midfielder Nemanja Matic left to rejoin former club Chelsea on Thursday morning.
