Theo Walcott 2-0 Gesture v Tottenham

Theo Walcott was not punished for signing the scoreline to the Tottenham Hotspursection at the Emirates Stadium in Arsenal’s 2-0 FA Cup victory.

Supporters of both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have come under scrutiny as the FA have released a statement requesting both clubs look into cases of thrown missiles from both home and away sections during Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Spurs on Saturday, January 4 at the Emirates Stadium.

One man who will not face retrospective action, however, is Gunners forward Theo Walcott, who tormented the Tottenham defence with a strong attacking display, attempting eight shots on goal with two on target and displaying a positional sense that was a near constant threat while he was on the pitch.

The fleet-footed Englishman, though, was brought off the field late in the game due to a knee complaint, an injury that may well keep him sidelined for up to a month but, while he was stretchered off, he reacted to a vocal shellacking from the Spurs section by reminding them of the score – see photograph above.

Immediately afterwards, in the ITV studios, the pundits pondered whether the actions could havestarted a riot or whether football fans are just reactionary and/or stupid. Consensus opinion was that the FA would look into the incident but no action would be made, something BBC presenter and Tottenham legend Gary Lineker backed, while other Arsenal stars recreated the gesture at home, much to the amusement of their social media following.

A statement released by The FA confirmed: ‘The FA has contacted Arsenal’s Theo Walcott and reminded him of his responsibilities regarding a ‘scoreline’ gesture he made in front of away supporters during the game.’

This decision has obviously gone done well with those who wear red and white, with the reaction on Twitter claiming the FA loved Walcott’s gesture as much as they did, while others stated that the throwing of coins was a waste of money as Theo is not a busker requiring dirty change.
